Acts 7 – Pastor Mac Daily DEVO

You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. Acts 7:51 – You don’t have to respond and behave as those before you did. In our chapter Stephen does an amazing job at connecting the past centuries of rebellion of Israel to the current rebellion that was present in the Jewish leaders. Isreal had turned away from God and embraced idols over and over, and while maybe idolatry in that sense wasn’t taking place, there was a refuse to worship Jesus just like there was a refusal to worship the Lord for so many generations. “As your father did, so do you.” We too may see those around us handle things, handle people, or even handle the Lord in certain ways. We may see a parent handle another person with disrespect or we may have seen a past employer throw their weight around to get what they want. The examples are endless, but we can witness others handling things poorly and decide to follow their example. We can also be rude, throw our weight around, and go after idols; like those before us we can do as they did. Or…we can choose to live differently. We can choose to say the idolatry ends with us. We can choose to speak with love and respect to all. We can choose to not do as “our fathers” did. I encourage you that if you have seen poor examples of how to live in this life, let them be the catalyst to your change not the standard you live by. Faithfulness can start with your generation so that the next, when they do as their fathers did, it would not mean they lived in sin but lived faithfully for the Lord. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3615

Question To Ponder: Why would the Lord allow us to have unfaithful examples in our life?

Stephen is leveling a significant charge against the Sanhedrin. They can’t hear the Holy Spirit, just like their ‘spiritual’ fathers before them. Stephen is, in essence, saying their hearts have not been circumcised. They do the external cutting of the flesh (the following of the law) but haven’t let the Holy Spirit cut at the heart. The Apostle Paul said it this way: ‘For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision* outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter [of the law]. His praise is not from man but from God.’* Romans 2:28-9. If the Holy Spirit hasn’t touched our hearts, then all our religious practices have no value. Our prayer should be, ‘God, change my heart’.
