…in the third year of his reign he gave a feast for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were before him, while he showed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor and pomp of his greatness for many days, 180 days. Esther 1:3-4 – As we start this new book of Esther for our devotions, we get a glimpse into just how great the Persian empire was as this time in history. It was the world power. Ahasuerus, or better known as Xerxes, was the emperor of Persia at this time and decided to flaunt his pride and wealth with a feast like none other. 180 days for his officials and army, then for a week after this for all the people in capital city. Riches and wine flowed, revealing just how great Xerxes was. Yet as we progress throughout this chapter, we see how such power and wealth didn’t exempt him from stupidity and sin. Alcohol ruined him, bad company ruined his marriage, and pride destroyed his life. Xerxes didn’t see what King Solomon saw, that all the riches of the world truly meant nothing in this life and can add nothing meaningful to your life. Only God can do that. I know that none of us reading this devotion are emperors of world powers (I suppose if you are and you’re reading this…then hello!), but in our ways our pride can destroy our lives if we allow it too. Try to remember that all these worldly treasures we prioritize so much truly mean nothing and have no eternal value. When we elevate such things too high in our life we can begin to see the damage seen in this chapter, a destroying of our life and relationships. Enjoy the blessings God gives, but refuse to let pride be attached to such things. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3600
Question To Ponder: Why would God allow us to have things that may trip us up with pride?
