Then he brought me to the inner court through the south gate, and he measured the south gate. It was of the same size as the others. Ezekiel 40:28 – Recently at our church we had some contractors come out to measure different rooms within our church for some future remodeling we’re considering doing. They were measuring everything. Floors, wall heights, cabinet heights, cabinet depths…like truly anything you could think of they were measuring. For me, as I’m doing this walkthrough with them and they’re doing all this measuring, I’m zoning out and completely not checking into what they are doing! I can’t help but wonder if that’s where Ezekiel was as during the measuring that was happening in this passage, especially when each piece was exactly the same as the others. Yet what causes me to believe Ezekiel wasn’t checked out was because the thing being measured was the future, new temple of the Lord. After the old temple was already destroyed over a decade ago, seeing a new and glorious temple would have kept the prophet’s attention. As you then go about your day, and especially as you go about the monotony of your day, it can be easily to just check out and not fulfill the great commission where you’ve been planted. Like Ezekiel, fix your eyes on the beauty that is to come to keep your attention fixed where it should be. As it was with Ezekiel it is for us. In the future will be a new temple and we’ll have a Heavenly Priest, Jesus, running the show. When it’s difficult to remain focused on what matters, allow your mind to dwell on what’s ahead for every believer. Let the future endless joys fuel your focus on the Lord today.
