Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’” Ezekiel 37:11 – Imagine someone you know at the lowest spot in their life emotionally as you’ve ever seen then. Truly they feel as if everything is lost, that no help is coming near, and they are so spent of everything they could just fade with the lightest of breeze. This is the image Ezekiel is given of the house of Israel. Israel was all dried up. No hope, no help, and just a valley of dry bones breaking apart into the dirt. Yet if you read the verses prior to our verse above its clear what the Lord can do with a valley of dry bones. He can revive them, breathe life back into them, and cause them to stand once again. This is what God was promising to do with dried up Israel, and it’s a promise we can place our hope in as well as believers when we feel “dried up.” Life easily can take everything out of us to where we feel so spent that even just a gram more of weight on us would crush us. Yet our God is able to step into that dry season with us and lead us beside still waters. He is able to breathe life back into our lifeless seasons. He is able to provide the strength to stand once again, even when that strength hasn’t been there for a while. What else on earth can take a valley of dry bones and bring them back to life like this?
