Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the world below. You shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword. “This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.” Ezekiel 31:18 – While at first it seems like this chapter is only talking about Assyria, this final verse reminds us of what was really going on in this chapter. Certainly God was speaking about the empire of Assyria and all is past greatness. Relating it to a grand tree, Assyria was beautiful, powerful, and well supported. Yet Assyria had a different attribute by the time Ezekiel began prophesying, and that attribute was “conquered.” Yes it was beautiful and yes it was powerful, but the Babylonians we able to destroy it easily. Now here comes Egypt, boasting in its power and beauty. God reminds them that as grand as they might think they are, they weren’t grander than Assyria and Assyria was taken out by Babylon…so what chance does Egypt have? None, and that’s the whole point of the chapter. As big as you might think you are, the hand of God is grander. While likely none of us reading this are the leader of an empire or nation, how then can this apply to us? We must settle that no matter how great we may think we are, God’s hand will always be greater and grand enough to come against our sinfulness. We can’t hide our sin in places God can’t reach and sin cannot offer us the rescue from Hell that it often is seeking us to believe it can. If Egypt, Assyria, and even Babylon’s sinfulness was addressed by God, even with all their power to defend themselves and they were still destroyed, know we stand no chance in sticking with our sin when God’s judgement comes our way.
