Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: “You consider yourself a lion of the nations, but you are like a dragon in the seas; you burst forth in your rivers, trouble the waters with your feet, and foul their rivers.” Ezekiel 32:2 - Egypt in this time in middle-eastern history was second only to Babylon in power and greatness. Egypt viewed itself and a mighty lion, king of the jungle whose roar would strike fear into the hearts of any. Yet see how the Lord speaks of this “lion.” He calls them in our verse “like a dragon in the seas,” but other translations say it more in a way we can relate with…a crocodile. Egypt thought of themselves a mighty lion, God just called them a restless crocodile that only just muddies up the waters around it with its thrashing. They were nothing in power compared to the Lord. For us, scripture says our enemy is prowling around like a roaring lion. That can be startling, but let’s be real, how many of you have been hurt by a roar? It might cause us to jump if it came unexpected, but a roar can’t hurt us. Such is our enemy, compared to our God he is just a crocodile thrashing in the mud, making a big scene but only mudding up the waters in the process. While it can be frustrating, and even scary, when the enemy does his thrashing, like with Egypt our enemy is of no challenge to our God who reigns over all.
