And I will dry up the Nile and will sell the land into the hand of evildoers; I will bring desolation upon the land and everything in it, by the hand of foreigners; I am the Lord; I have spoken. Ezekiel 30:12 – Likely every phrase in this sentence of prophesied destruction would have struck the hearers, yet I believe the first phrase about drying up the Nile would have hit differently. For the Nile River to the Egyptians was everything. It was life to them. Their food and water came from it. Their entire way of life was centered around the Nile. They even worshipped the Nile as a god for it was to them the life-blood of Egypt. No Nile, no Egypt, and what did the Lord just say would come? A drying up of the Nile. While this wasn’t a literal drying up, the imagery is that the very thing you’ve found life from won’t be able to provide life for them anymore when God steps in. No protection, no help, and no provision from the Nile could save them from the power of God for the Lord was greater than the Nile. While it’s comforting to know God is greater than the giants that come against us, we must also remember that God is greater than the “rivers” we are trusting in over Him as well. Also remember both He plans to take down. Giants will fall and rivers will be dried up, all so we can stand before Him holy and blameless. As you look at your life, is there a “Nile River” you’ve been finding life from over the life that God is offering you? Has it been what you’ve been relying on to get you through another day? While you may be in denial, pun intended, that you have a “Nile River,” if the Lord reveals that to be the case, lay it aside and find your all in Him instead.
