Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose corrosion is in it, and whose corrosion has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice. Ezekiel 24:6 – The day that had been prophesied would come had finally come, Babylon had begun their destruction of the city of Jerusalem. Once again the imagery of large cooking pot is given. Babylon being the cooking pot had prepped the “meal” by getting the fire going and water in the pot. Then the meat, Jerusalem, was added into the pot to cook. In the minds of the people Ezekiel was speaking to, they believed they were the choicest of meats, God’s perfect people, where even if thrown into a pot they’d be pulled out and kept aside for the best treatment. Yet see what our passage says about this “choice meat.” The meat was full of corruption and it was making the whole pot filled with its poison, so it was pulled out quickly and thrown on the rocks to rot in the open. God’s message for the people of Israel then is one people in our world need to hear as well, we aren’t as “choice” as we may believe we are. We are not naturally good and holy, instead we are corrupted by sin. Nothing we can do can remove that corruption from us like nothing we could do could reverse the rot of meat once it’s began. Yet Jesus can do all things, He can even take the rot of sin out of our lives and make us perfectly whole and “choice” again. Let us not fall into the trap that Israel did by believing on our own we are good enough to be saved aside from the fire, for we are not.
