Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, you yourself must bear the consequences of your lewdness and whoring. Ezekiel 23:35 – This chapter is quite a graphic description given by the Lord to what He witnessed within the lives of His people. Samaria and Jerusalem, depicted as the two sisters in the illustration given, had their sinful deeds portrayed as the adulterous deeds of two wayward women. They slept with every man they could, giving their body away in every way they could. They went after their “lovers’” idols and even sacrificed their own children in the worship of such idols. All this brings us to our verse above. Shifting out of the illustration to speak plainly, the Lord says as a result of casting me aside to worship these idols, you then are going to face the punishments attached to your sin. While possibly an uncomfortable read, this chapter speaks the reality of the Gospel. Humanity has turned away from the Lord to follow after all sorts of “lovers.” Jesus came, offering us a new path and new life, but if we like these two sisters in our passage remain after these false lovers and cast the Lord aside, then we’ll have to bear the consequences of our sin as well. Jesus willingly bore our punishment of sin on the cross, and all who accept Him have their sin consequences taken care of. Yet a forgetting of God and casting Him behind our back, like we see in the chapter, will result in us bearing the punishment for our sin instead, all when it could have been taken care of by Jesus if we just turned to Him. Hear today that in Jesus your sin can be washed clean and you can be made holy in the sight of God, but a refusal to follow Jesus will leave you in the same place these two sisters were left in.
