And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. Therefore I have poured out my indignation upon them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have returned their way upon their heads, declares the Lord God. Ezekiel 22:30-31 – This chapter shows what Israel did not see and what the Lord did not find. For Israel, they couldn’t see the clear message God was spelling out for them. Repeatedly, and in ways they could understand, the Lord spoke to them to stop their sin. The Lord refers to them as a bloody/pagan type city to open their eyes, He relates their future to like a furnace melting down metals and scraping off the dross, and He even goes as basic as calling their leaders wolves in a sheep pen, something they would have connected easily with. Yet Israel wasn’t seeing the message due to closed eyes, and as a result the Lord did not find what He was looking for. He sought a man, someone like Moses or David, who would stand in the gap between sinful Israel and the Lord to plead for mercy. For see how often in scripture when that took place did the Lord relent and hold back His anger. God wanted someone to speak up and stand up for God wanted a reason to hold back, but none stood up. While this was a terrible time for Israel, we rest in confidence that when it comes to our sin we have someone “standing in the breach.” Jesus is forever making intercession for us with the Father and Jesus has taken the wrath of God towards our sin upon Himself. God sought a man, found none, so He sent His Son, and now all who believe in Jesus have found forever peace with the Father. Turn then from your sin and follow Jesus if you haven’t yet.
