Because I will cut off from you both righteous and wicked, therefore my sword shall be drawn from its sheath against all flesh from south to north. Ezekiel 21:4 – Imagine driving in a vehicle with a handful of kids to go get ice cream. While two of the kids are behaving well, the others are screaming and fighting. You tell them to stop, you even go so far to tell them if they don’t stop there will be no ice cream trip, yet they refuse to listen. You then follow through and turn the car around, no ice cream. Yet in such a situation, yes the misbehaving kids were punished, but also the kids who were behaving well were punished for they didn’t get ice cream either. This is the type of situation we see in our chapter. In Israel the majority were unfaithful to the Lord, refusing to listen to anything the Lord said about stopping their sin. Yet there were still some who were righteous, following God like they should. When punishment came though, like we see in the passage, it came on everyone, the righteous and the wicked. No one got ice cream. God is wanting everyone to see that no one wins when sin is allowed. Yes the wicked get punished, but even the righteous will often feel the pains attached to the punishment of the wicked. Thankfully though this scenario breaks down when it comes to ultimate judgement. No one who follows Jesus will ever find themselves in Hell because they were lumped into the punishment attached to the wicked, but we must settle that in this life we will still feel the pains attached to the wicked’s choice to sin. Since no one benefits from “no ice cream,” let us who are seeking to follow Jesus faithfully be a part of stopping the sinning in the lives of those around us. Speak into their life and help them see the punishment ahead, for this may save them from eternal punishment and save you from feeling earthly pains attached to their sinning.
