And behold, the man clothed in linen, with the writing case at his waist, brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded me.” Ezekiel 9:11 – In a vision we have Ezekiel witnessing the very punishment he had been preaching would come. The Lord calls upon six angels who would carry about a mass execution, and also calls another angel who has some means to mark people. The command was for the angel with the marking device to go throughout the city and mark all the people that refused to follow the sinful ways of the city and who were grieved at the state Israel had become. This mark would act like the Passover lamb’s blood in Exodus, where when the six executioners were sent out, if they saw someone had this mark that person would be spared. In this last verse of the chapter we see that the angel doing the marking returned to the Lord and reported that he did all that the Lord commanded. While this is a passage that is helpful to visualize, it also is one that can grieve us deeply when we grasp the magnitude of death that Ezekiel had to witness. Notice though while an extreme responsibility, with a tremendous cost if not done, the angel doing the marking did what God called him to do. Will you? For let’s remember much like the angel doing the marking, we are walking throughout our life seeing people every day. Each person that doesn’t accept Jesus has the fate of eternal death. While we may not like this reality, when we who hold the Gospel message refuse to share the Gospel it’s as if we went by someone and refused to mark them like in this passage, settling their fate for death. Christians have an extreme call to help everyone we can know the Gospel, for those who do not accept Jesus have Hell as their future. Share the Gospel and be a part of the marking of people for life.
