And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations that the house of Israel are committing here, to drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see still greater abominations.” Ezekiel 8:6 - If you’ve ever been invited to see something you’d rather not see, you can begin to feel Ezekiel’s pain. In a vision the Lord began to shed light on what’s happening behind closed doors within the life of God’s people. Vile idolatry to a whole host of abominations was happening, even to the point that worship of idols was happening in the very temple of God. Do you also see the language God used to describe the intentions behind such idolatry? The people were seeking to drive God out of His very temple. The temple was still a place of worship, but not for the Lord anymore. As we entertain sin and allow things of this world to be our idols, what the Israelites were saying with their actions is what we are saying to the Lord. “God, I don’t want you around anymore.” Now we may never verbalize that, but when we consistently choose the very things God commands us to keep out of our life, what other message could there be? That yes, we’ve been given this body and it’s a place for the Holy Spirit to reside, but we’d rather be consumed with sin than holiness…so move over Spirit. What we should takeaway from this is a reminder that how we handle sin communicates a message to the Lord. When we embrace sin, it tells the Lord we don’t want Him around. When we reject sin, we communicate to the Lord we love Him and desire to follow Him. Which message then is being communicated from your life?
