Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! Your doom has come; the rod has blossomed; pride has budded. Ezekiel 7:10 – All the way back in Numbers 16-17 we see a rebellion happening against God and God’s chosen leaders Moses and Aaron. Chiefs of the people couldn’t understand why Moses and Aaron were given such prominence and authority, so they sought to take it from them and claim it for themselves. To settle who was God’s chosen leader, all the chiefs and Aaron were to lay their staffs in the tent of meeting overnight and whichever one bloomed was to be God’s chosen leader. The next day all the staffs were the same expect for Aaron’s, whose staff/rod had blossomed and even produces ripe almonds. This was a sign of God’s confirmation on Aaron and judgement on the rebellious chiefs. Here Ezekiel reminds them of this story as a way to demonstrate God’s judgement on Israel’s rebellion. The rod had blossomed and their pride had caused buds to be grown on the Lord’s staff, and it wasn’t to show the people they were in the right but that they were in the wrong against God. While we might not have a walking stick bloom with flowers, we do have God’s word to show us when we are in the right or wrong. Essentially that’s what Aaron’s staff was all about, to show the rebellious chiefs they were in the wrong and God was in the right. As you then deepen your time in God’s word allow it to reveal where any rebellion may be at in your heart. Allow the Lord through His word to show you His way and how your ways may be going in an opposite direction. Take from these chapters that God is in the right and He handles our wrong seriously.
