And you, O son of man, take a sharp sword. Use it as a barber’s razor and pass it over your head and your beard. Then take balances for weighing and divide the hair. Ezekiel 5:1 – This prophet must have been the talk of the town for he continued to do strange things. As the crowds watched, Ezekiel took a sharp sword and carefully shaved his beard and head with it. Then once the hair was cut, using a scale he divided it up equally into thirds, and all this was to show the coming judgements over God’s people for their sin. Let’s talk though about what Ezekiel did. For priests, which is what Ezekiel was, cutting their hair was forbidden. Take note as well that the message wasn’t one of joy and peace. One-third will die by pestilence and famine, one-third will die be the sword, and one-third will be scattered and die on the run. Doing the math, that’s the whole number of God’s people about to be dealt with severely and it was Ezekiel’s role to share that message. As we saw with yesterday’s devotion and passage, the Lord may ask us to do difficult and even culturally unacceptable things. For Ezekiel laying on your side for 430 days then cutting your hair which for a priest normally meant a loss of your priestly status, this would have not been easy. Sharing as well the dark fate of God’s people would not be a joyous message to proclaim, but this was God’s call for Ezekiel. Your call may be just as challenging and you may have to deal out some difficult messages to people too.
