And I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who were dwelling by the Chebar canal, and I sat where they were dwelling. And I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days. And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me. Ezekiel 3:15-16 – Ezekiel had just received a very difficult call on his life. Like many of the prophets before and after him, he was to go out and speak the words of God to the rebellious people of God. Having this new commission and it being attached to the event he just went through of seeing the glories of heaven like he did, Ezekiel was overwhelmed. So overwhelmed that he had to sit down and didn’t get up for seven days! What’s beautiful to me is that God allowed this rest to allow Ezekiel to process everything, but we also see that this rest didn’t last forever. Eventually the Lord spoke again and it was time for the prophet to begin prophesying. We too may sometimes be overwhelmed with the mission that God has given us to do. Maybe its loving that difficult person or moving our family to a new city to invest in the gospel work there. Such directions can be hard to process and know God allows us time for the processing like He did with Ezekiel. Yet, like with Ezekiel, there must be a time when we get up. We can sit, we can process, but at some point if we want to remain faithful to God we must get up and begin the work God has called us to. God is gracious with us to allow that processing time, but He is about His work being done in this world. If then you fall into the camp of knowing what God has called you to yet you haven’t started yet, let this devo be your encouragement to stand up and begin.
