For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. 1 Thessalonians 2:5-6 – Why are you going out to people and doing the holy things you are doing? It’s a self-reflective question that believers ought to ask of themselves as they are doing the missional work God has called them to. Why are you serving on that team at church? Why are you signing up to go on that mission trip? Why are you reading your Bible during lunch at work where everyone can see? Is it because you know such things are the holy options and you desire to be pleasing to the Lord with your life? Great, then keep at it! Yet if we’re honest with ourselves, the reasonings can end up less than holy. Maybe we serve on that team because you know it gives you leverage in the church. Maybe you sign up because you know it will look good on social media for you. Maybe you read like you do to prove a point you’re better than others. These are just possible reasonings, but we see from them and our verse that we can do the holy works of the Lord with less than holy motives. We can share the word so we can be flattered or gain something for ourselves. Instead, let’s aim always to have a posture of doing the Lord’s work for His glory alone, not ours. If someone is to be noticed by our works and if someone is to be praise because of our words, let it be Jesus.
