The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” Psalm 110:1 – How to understand this psalm is by understanding who is talking to who. We see it says, “the Lord says to my Lord,” and for us in English that looks the same, but in Hebrew it would be two different words. In Hebrew it would read Yahweh says to Adonai. Without overcomplicating it, what we learn is that this is a conversation between God the Father and God the Son. The Father is speaking to the Son, and we are getting a glimpse into their holy conversation. While there is so much to be said of this psalm, for it’s even the most quoted psalm of the New Testament, I just am overjoyed that God allowed us to see into this conversation. For dwell on what that means for us. The Father isn’t seeking to hide His works from us nor keep us at a distance. The Father desires us to know what He is doing and desires us near enough to hear His words. Certainly there are things that we don’t know and can’t even understand if we tried about our Lord, but the baseline posture of our God is not secrecy nor deception. He’s given us His word, He allows us to hear Him speak, and He’s even given us Himself through the Son’s coming to earth. Compare this to the false gods in our world that can’t speak and have no words for their people and don’t even have breath in them to make words out of.
