May his days be few; may another take his office! May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow! May his children wander about and beg, seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit! Psalm 109:8-10 – Shockingly, yes, this is in the Bible! What we have is David praying to the Lord about the ruin he desires for those who had come against him during his time of weakness. Whether David is speaking of a singular person, or speaking of a group as a single person, the curses David asks for is intense. That the enemy’s wife would suffer as a widow and his children be brought to beggar status. That everything he owned would be taken away, that none would be kind to the generations of his family, and that even his name would be blotted out from memory. Again, intense curses being penned down by David to be included in scripture. So why are we highlighting such hateful speech? We need to take note of how David handled this and follow his example. David yes spoke some hateful words, but spoke them to the Lord in prayer. David, while having all the power to destroy this enemy, chose instead to bring his hate and emotions to the Lord and entrusted the Lord with retribution. Having hate in our hearts towards people is not good, but coming to the Lord and giving it to Him is. God can handle the harsh words and handle the intense emotions. This may be the only way we can truly love our enemies is when we come to the Lord and let Him take from us the hatred and bitterness from our heart. Question To Ponder: Why would God direct us to go to Him with our hatred of people instead of dealing with it ourselves?
