Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph. Psalm 108:9 – This psalm is unique for it actually isn’t a new psalm, but a combination of sections from two other psalms. Psalm 108:1-5 is very similar to Psalm 57:7-11, and Psalm 108:6-13 is practically identical to Psalm 60:5-12. Why though would God repeat Himself like this in His holy scripture? Had He hit some sort of writer’s block and thought a sneaky way to add an extra psalm was to combine a couple and hope nobody noticed? Not at all, God repeated Himself so a powerful truth about Himself could be repeated in our lives. That God reigns. Our verse above begins to hint at the far reaches of His reign. God wasn’t just powerful in Israel, but even powerful in all the nations surrounding Israel. In Old Testament times it was believed that gods had power only over certain geographical areas, but beyond those areas they held no power or influence. Here the Lord is shattering such thoughts about His reign. Certainly over Israel He reigned, but His power didn’t stop there. Over Moab He reigned, over Edom He reigned, even over Philistia where Goliath was from He reigned. God’s people then, and God’s people now need to know that over all places God reigns. In your home, in your work, at your school, over death, over sickness…over all. He is Lord over all places and Lord over all people. Dwell on what this means practically for your life. If God truly is Lord over all people and places, how would that impact your daily life? Let’s begin by acknowledging His presence with us in all such places and living in such a way that reveals to Him we acknowledge His reign in our life.
