And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring). For I know what they are inclined to do even today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give. Deuteronomy 31:21 - Even with as faithful as the Lord had been with the nation of Israel these forty plus years He knew they were going to soon turn away from Him to follow other gods. In this chapter Moses is told he’s going to die, Joshua is going to take over, Israel is going to step into their Promised Land, and sadly they are going to forsake the God who has been with them every step of the way so far. God then chooses a unique way to remind them of the covenant the nation had with Him and the pains they’d be walking themselves into when they rejected God. God gave them a song, a song we’ll see in the next chapter. It would be a song they’d always remember and when the lyrics were processed it would confront their sin and remind them why they were in such troubles. In our walk with God He too has blessed us with songs that have a deep purpose. Purposes to remind us of His greatness and purposes to crush the lies of the enemy over us. Songs can convict like the one in Deuteronomy and they can bring joy. Take time to dwell on the words of the songs of worship you love so much. Let the Lord speak through them to bring to mind what He wants you to hear. And be sure to always compare what we hear through songs to that of God’s word. For scripture is infallible, music isn’t. If what we hear in song matches the truths of scripture, lean in and let those truths shape your life. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3469
