Deuteronomy 5 – Pastor Mac Daily DEVO

And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.” Deuteronomy 5:1 – The progression within this verse I believe is what every parent, boss, teacher, authority figure, etc. wants to see take place with the people they are over. Moses is about to restate the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel (so fun Bible fact you can find them outlined twice in the Bible, here and in Exodus 20), so notice the progression in verse one. Moses wanted Israel to “hear” all the rules he was about to layout for them once again. He wanted them not distracted but focused on his words so they’d actually hear what he is saying. Then he progressed to “learning” these rules. This meant Moses wanted the people to not only hear the words being spoken but to put them to memory as words that they knew intimately well. Then, the last and most important aspect of the progress, “do.” For there is certainly great value in hearing God’s word and learning God’s word so it is hidden in our heart, but if the progression ends with hearing and listen but never moves onto “doing” then we’ve missed the mark. Jesus Himself spoke against this missed progression in the lives of the Pharisees, who knew well the law and taught it but did not do what they knew to be holy. Find yourself in places where you are hearing the word of God in your life and let is settle deep within your mind and heart. Then take the next step to actually do what you have heard and learned. Show the love, give the forgiveness, offer the sacrifice, worship the Lord. Don’t let God be something you only know deeply about but are doing the things you know deeply about. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3444

Question To Ponder: Why does it matter if we actually do the things we’ve learned about in the Bible?
