And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. Acts 13:48-50 – It’s crazy to me how you can share the exact same message to two different people and have totally differently reactions. “The Chiefs won the Super Bowl,” will cause some to leap for joy and others to cry themselves to sleep. “____ won the election,” will cause a divided response for everything about politics splits (except I believe we’d all agree to less text political ads…) Here the message was that the Gentiles were now to receive the blessings and salvation of God just as the Jews did. The Gentile response to such news? Overjoyed! The Jewish response? At least by many of the leaders we see they despised those words and sought to kick the messengers of such news out of town. Same message, different response from different people. Know as you share the Gospel you will get different responses from different people. My encouragement to you is don’t let either type of response cement your view of evangelism. When people respond well, celebrate, but don’t expect that to be the case always for if you do you’ll be in for a shocker. When people respond poorly, don’t let that single case dictate for you that you will never share again. See how the apostle Peter himself spoke the truth of the Gospel and had different responses from different people, this is a normal thing! Know this is true, celebrate the wins, and when the rejection comes dust off your feet and move onto the next person that needs Jesus. While we’ll get different responses to the Gospel message from different people, the message stays the same: Jesus loves us and only though Jesus can we find forgiveness of our sins and eternal life.
