And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Acts 4:1-2 - While there are so many verses in this passage I’d love to write about, these first two stood out to me due to the passage I’m prepping to preach on this upcoming Sunday morning. Our church is covering John 7 where likely these same religious leaders were coming at Jesus for healing a lame man and teaching what He was teaching. Now the disciples are doing the exact same thing through the power of Jesus! And what was the response of the wicked leaders? Greatly annoyed…I love it! I hope they were and it’s not surprising either that they were greatly annoyed! Here they thought they put an end to this Jesus fellow and now His name is being proclaimed again, and this time even more people are doing the works and more people are listening! It’s like trying to clean up a mess while the trash bag has a hole in it, the mess just keeps spreading the more you walk! Such was the church of Jesus, spreading more and more and they tried to “clean” it up. What I see in these verses is a beautiful reminder that our role is simply to do as Jesus did. Let’s not over complicate the work of the Gospel, let’s simply mirror what we can of what Jesus did. Sit with those others don’t, speak the truth relentlessly but with grace, be willing to sacrifice for others to hear the message of salvation. Sure the enemy will be greatly annoyed with that, and that’s just a bonus for us! For when we mirror our Savior, just as in this passage, we’ll simultaneously frustrated our enemy and help people to Jesus. That’s a pretty sweet two-for-one deal!
