It shall be the prince’s duty to furnish the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings, at the feasts, the new moons, and the Sabbaths, all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel: he shall provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings, to make atonement on behalf of the house of Israel. Ezekiel 45:17 – If you’re like me, when you read through portions of the Old Testament where the Lord is outlining the amounts of sacrifices the people were called to offer at the feasts or for different occasions, you’d wonder like I do at where would all these offerings come from. Daily bulls and sheep and massive amounts of grain. While maybe it would have been different if we lived in that time for we’d see just how common such creatures were, but it looks like a lot of animals needed to be given constantly. So how did they provide for the need? The government…sort of. We learn in this chapter that in this new Jerusalem the people were to give their offerings to the prince and the prince would supply all the sacrificial items needed. The system mirrors much of what we need to remember as the church today. None of us alone can afford to give all the things the church and the mission needs to keep going. Just look at some of our church’s annual budgets and you’ll clearly see there’s no way someone could cover that alone. Yet that’s not the design. Everyone gives so everything can be taken care of. You give out of your time, she gives out of her account, I give out of my talents, and the Lord uses/multiplies such things to cover the needs. When you are overwhelmed with the needs of the church or the burdens laid upon you attached to your call, remember you were never designed to fulfill those things alone.
