And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30 - In this chapter we see God’s favor being placed on people in all sorts of ways. In the verse above Mary is chosen by God to carry the Messiah. Zechariah and Elizabeth are shown God’s favor by being blessed with parenting John who would be the one foretold by the prophets would prepare the way for the Lord. Even the world of people at this time could be included in being shown favor for they were blessed with having the Savior be born in their day. Yet was it because any of these people earned God’s favor that it was shown to them, or was it because God chose to show it? With Mary, we aren’t told she did anything remarkable, just lived a faithful Jewish lady’s life. Zechariah was serving in the temple, but that wasn’t anything unique for him or his people, but the duties attached to his work. And the people of the world…well we know from Romans the world wasn’t doing anything uber faithful to earn God’s favor. No, none of these individuals did something special to earn God’s favor. God simply chose to show His favor. While this is true, we can’t help but see a connection between those who were highlighted in this chapter as receiving God’s favor. It was those willing to live the seemingly basic, but faithful life. Those willing to listen and steadfastly obey His word. Do you then seek God’s favor on your life? Know we can’t earn it somehow to where God is obligated to show it to us, but a steadfast to His word life is the sort of life that finds God’s favor. Know His word, follow His word, share His word.
