1 Thessalonians 5 – Pastor Mac Daily DEVO

But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 – If you are a follower of Jesus Christ then your life is radically different than that of someone who is not a follower. Paul highlights a key difference in our passage; we are not in the dark. We are in the light, children of the Light, children of God Himself. What that means for us is that we are not blind to the realities of what’s to come with Jesus’ return and the afterlife. Those who are not followers of Jesus are like those asleep, blind to the knowledge of the true future of things, so they live their lives ignorantly. They sin, party, drink, sleep, for they don’t know what’s coming. We though who are in the light know what’s coming. We know Jesus is coming and judgment on this world is coming, so we live differently. We handle sin differently and we handle our time differently…or at least we should. This is the encouragement we should gain from such a passage, a reminder that since we know the truth of the future our present day lives should look different than those who are ignorant of the future. If you knew a bomb was in your building, it would make sense that people who were ignorant of the bomb would just go about their day as usual, but it would be insane for you to live that way knowing of the danger. You’d behave vastly different because you had knowledge of the bomb. So live differently in this world because you have knowledge of what’s to come with Jesus’ return. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3529

Question To Ponder: What is a way we ought to live differently than the world because we know Jesus is coming?
