Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn. Deuteronomy 10:16 – For the Israelites physical circumcision was a way to outwardly display their devotion and obedience to the Lord. For us a similar thing in our walk with God might be getting baptized or going to church. Things that people can see on the outside that show we are followers of Jesus. Yet as we saw in the previous chapter, Moses pointed out how stubborn and rebellious the Israelites were all along the journey in the wilderness. They may have been outwardly displaying they were faithfully following God, but inwardly there was rejection and disobedience. Moses then in our verse challenges the people to not only be circumcised on the outside, but to also have a circumcision of the heart. To be inwardly changed, not only outwardly. To change their stubbornness and to change their disobedient actions. In our walk God desires from us the exact same as Moses desired from his people. Outward displays of devotion are great. Wear those Christian t-shirts, go to Bible studies, rock the WWJD bracelets…but don’t let the change God makes only be outwardly. Let your heart be changed by Jesus too. This means the way you think, speak, and behave are going to be seeking to be holy, not just your wardrobe. We see Moses having an issue with this outwardly clean/inwardly dirtiness of his people, and we see Jesus have the same issue with people in His day. Let’s give the Lord a follower that is not only outwardly displaying our devotion to Him but one also with a heart that has been changed to pursue what His heart pursues. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3449
