Therefore thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely it is my oath that he despised, and my covenant that he broke. I will return it upon his head. Ezekiel 17:19 – Not only is this chapter stated as a riddle, if you have no background on the context, you would be utterly lost. In short, Ezekiel is speaking about how King of Judah Zedekiah (the vine) broke his promise of submission with Babylon (the first eagle) and reached out to Egypt (the second eagle) for help to attack Babylon. This was not a wise move on Zed’s part for Egypt would be of no help, yet also the Lord was offended by this action. For when Zed made this oath to Babylon he also made it to the Lord in submission to the Lord’s direction. Meaning when Zed broke the oath with Babylon he also broke his word with the Lord, something the Lord doesn’t handle lightly. This set up is something believers should take note of. As followers of Christ we carry His name into everything we step into, that includes our commitments and promises. When we break those commitments, not only are we causing damage to the one we broke the commitment with, but we are tainting God’s name for He’s connected with us. As we see in this chapter, God didn’t appreciate having His name trashed liked that and He still doesn’t in our day. Remember in everything you step into the name of Jesus is stepping in with you. How you handle yourself, especially in how you keep your word, represents Him to the world around you. Make sure the image you are setting for others of the Lord is one of honesty and faithfulness.
