Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life, therefore you shall no more see false visions nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. And you shall know that I am the Lord. Ezekiel 13:22-23 – Amongst the people of Israel were false prophets, both men and women who were speaking falsehoods to God’s people which led the people astray. When you imagine a false prophet, likely you think of someone spreading untruths about things with the devious plan to lead people into sin. That is exactly what was happening in Ezekiel day, these prophets were spreading messages that completely contradicted the messages God was saying and the result was people staying on course with their sin. Yet from these verses we see another means of corruption that was brought by these false prophets, a disheartening of the righteous. Not only did these false prophets lead sinning people deeper into their sin, but also righteous people into discouragement and doubt. While you likely don’t carry the label of “false prophet,” we do see two dangerous impacts our words can have if we aren’t careful to be speaking the truth of the Lord. We can encourage those in sin to remain in sin and we can also discourage those living righteously. Two things that are very much against what we’re called to do. Take in all the ways that scripture tells us to speak and speak the things God calls us to say. If our unchecked, unholy words can have such a sinful impact on people’s lives, make sure the words that come from your mouth are words that would honor the Lord.
