Luke 23 – Pastor Mac Daily DEVO

And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things. Luke 23:49 –  “Watching these things.” Seems like a simple way to describe the happenings of this verse. We might use that phrase to talk about watching kids play outside or some sports event, yet such is not the case with our chapter. This is the chapter of Jesus’ arrest, beating, and crucifixion and the “things” that were watched by Jesus’ followers was the brutality of those events. They watched Jesus be mocked and beaten. They watched Jesus nailed to a cross. They watched Jesus die. People like Jesus’ close follower John and even Jesus’ mother Mary was right there watching this all. For us we struggle to watch reenactments of the crucifixion, yet how much more difficult would it have been to see it live. I can only imagine what may have been going through their minds as I dwell on what goes through my mind when I see something brutal. “Why God did you let this happen?” “God, if you could have stopped this, why didn’t you?” “God, if you had other ways of accomplishing this same purpose, why did you allow this to be the one chosen?” Likely you’ve had thoughts like this too when you’ve seen tragedies on the news or even in your own bubble of people. Allow though this passage to remind us that even when the course the Lord chooses to take seems unexplainable to us, He has His purpose. God had His purpose with Jesus going through this scene and God has His purpose within the things He does in this world. No, I don’t understand why some of the things that happen in our world happen, but I do know God understands why they took place. And if Jesus was willing to go through what He did for me, I’m going to trust then that whatever courses the Lord chooses to take in this world must be somehow good too. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3552

Question To Ponder: Have you struggled to understand why God moves like He does?
