Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. Luke 10:13 – Tyre and Sidon were a couple cities in Jesus’ day that were known as hubs for sinfulness. We can probably think of some cities in our day that fit that description. Chorazin and Bethsaida, while not notoriously known for their sin, did sin in a terrible way. They refused to accept Jesus. Jesus came to them, preached to them, did mighty works in front of them, but the majority in these cities remained in rejection of Him. This is why Jesus says what He did in our verse. That while Tyre and Sidon were sinful cities, if they got the opportunity to see what Chorazin and Bethsaida got to see of Jesus, those sinful cities would have repented and embraced Jesus. As a result, those cities that saw and heard Jesus, yet rejected Jesus, would have it worse than those who never had the opportunity to accept Jesus. How this differencing judgements will play out I don’t fully understand, but what we see here is Jesus teaching that those who have been blessed with hearing and seeing more of Him than others will be held accountable to more than others. All those who reject Jesus will still face Hell, but somehow it will be even worse for those who heard all about Jesus yet still rejected Jesus. My plea then if you are reading this and you’ve grown up in church, heard all the sermons, heard all the Bible stories, yet still are rejecting Jesus to please choose Jesus. You fall into the very category the people of Chorazin and Bethsaida do. You’ve been blessed with hearing and seeing, choose then to embrace the Jesus you’ve seen and heard. The judgements that await you won’t have to await you if you choose Jesus. Cease the rejections and begin the acceptance of Jesus. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3539
Question To Ponder: Why would God raise the judgement on those who heard and saw more than others?
