And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. Luke 8:52-55 – They laughed at Jesus. Can you imagine such a reaction to Jesus our Lord? In our story we have a daughter of a man who was sick, but on Jesus’ way to heal her she died/feel asleep. By all worldly ways of understanding the situation, she was dead. It’s not that the family, doctors, and mourners mistook her nap for death. Jesus though knew His power and knew this girl’s future, and death was not her immediate future. Yet when He told them she was just resting, they laughed at Jesus. I would have loved though to see their faces when that girl arose and began munching on some bread! This story though reveals how easy it can be to limit Jesus by our powers. If Jesus only had the powers we possess, yet made the claims He made, it would be a laughing matter. Jesus though isn’t limited like we are but has all power. He has the power to calm the storms, to cast out legions of demons, to heal what no one else can, and even raise the dead…I mean sleeping. Let the all-powerful Jesus we see in this chapter be the Jesus you remember is behind the promises He makes to you. He can protect you, He can provide for you, He can save you. What a mighty God we serve! I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3537
