But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. Luke 6:24-25 – Know as Jesus is saying this He is not putting a blanket statement out that if you are wealthy or if you are filled up after a good meal or it you are laughing at a good joke, that you are somehow going to be punished. The idea here isn’t trashing such parts of life, for very likely Jesus enjoyed a good meal and laughed hard with His disciples. The bigger image we are to see is the idea of being content in what this world has to offer. If this world is enough for you and you decide then to not concern yourself about pursuing anything God related, then your future is bleak. Your future is hunger and weeping and without. Yet the one who doesn’t find their satisfaction in this world but pursues a life of holiness will see a future of blessing. Certainly in this life there will be death, poverty, and hunger, but because their eyes are fixed on the glories of Jesus to come, they will not be left without. Be willing then to ask yourself honestly if you are content with this world. Does the worldly pleasures and offerings in our life satisfy you enough that a pursuit of Jesus isn’t happening like it should be? Can you say your life with Jesus isn’t going strong because you’re so busy with life right now? This is what Jesus is speaking about in our passage. When the world’s work and offerings satisfy us more than Jesus’ work and offering. I encourage you if you’re in this spot to evaluate if what you are investing your all into will matter for eternity.
