But now you have cast off and rejected; you are full of wrath against your anointed. You have renounced the covenant with your servant; you have defiled his crown in the dust. Psalm 89:38-39 – If you read the entirety of this psalm, you’d feel some whiplash when verse 38 hit. For dozens of verses the psalmist is writing about God’s goodness and greatness. How God is faithful always to the end and how He never fails to keep His promises He makes to His people. The psalmist writes about the promised covenant the Lord made with David, to always keep someone on David’s throne, and how God would never undo those promises. Then our verses changed the tone immensely by saying God had undone His word and failed to keep His steadfast love. What we must understand though is this psalmist believed fully the words he wrote in the earlier verse, and even in these later verses where he speaks of God casting off and rejecting, he knew that wasn’t the truth. It just sure felt like it was. We don’t know the exact period the psalmist spoke of, but clearly it was a season of deep troubles for Israel. In that trouble, while the psalmist knew and believed the words of the Lord, it sure felt like they weren’t being kept. Likely you too have felt periods like this, where you know the promises of scripture, but with how life is going it sure doesn’t seem like God’s keeping any of His words to you. My encouragement to you is to not let the periods of trouble determine for you the truthfulness of our God or the extent of His goodness. A season of life may be terrible, but that doesn’t mean God is. His word has never to this day failed to be kept, and you can rest assured that it will not start failing with you. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3503
Question To Ponder: Why would God allow a season to go on where we feel His promises have failed to us?
