O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. Psalm 83:1-2 – At the start of this psalm we see the psalmist pleading to the Lord to end His silence and lack of movement in the life of His oppressed people. For in contrast to the silence of the Lord, the enemies of the Lord were making an uproar. They were loud, proud, and uniting themselves in plans to destroy God’s people. Notice though with me the progression of this psalm. It starts with a silent God and a loud enemy, yet ends with a description of the Lord moving and the enemies shamed and disgraced. Recognize that our enemies may be loud, proud, and uniting themselves against us. Their plans may be grand, and our lives may look to be in their hands. Yet when God moves, the enemies’ uproar ceases. When God speaks, the enemy grows silent. Know as a follower of Jesus that you are on the side that wins. It can seem like you’re not because the enemy is so obnoxiously loud in his taunts and boasting, but the One with true power knows He doesn’t have to flaunt for His greatness is undeniable. Never take God’s silence as His shame in not being great enough to defeat the enemy that comes against us. Sometimes the Lord may let the enemy lift himself higher so his fall is seen be the masses, and all will know who truly is the All Powerful One.
