Galatians 6 – Pastor Mac Daily DEVO

For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Galatians 6:3 – Paul starts out our chapter by reminding the church of our vital role in one another’s life. If we see a brother or sister in Christ stuck in sin, our role is to help them get unstuck. We aren’t to exclude, ignore, or cast condemnation, we are to come alongside them and bear their burden with them so they can be found walking faithfully again. Yet Paul highlights something that can be found in a believer’s life that will hinder them from ever being able to help another follower in Christ. That something is pride. Pride tells us we are too honorable and too important to stoop so low to help this person with their sin struggle. Pride is what convinces us that its acceptable for us to look down on another’s sin and cast condemning judgement on them. This is why Paul says what he does in our verse above, if anything thinks he is something special then he should remember the reality that he in fact is nothing. Not meaning we are worthless or trash, but when it comes to overcoming sin each of us are only victorious over sin because of Jesus. No one on their own overcame their sin, no one is more special than the next because they with their own power defeated their sin. That’s the idea of us all being “nothing.” We’re all on the same level when it comes to our ability to overcome sin on our own. So instead of puffing up with pride like you did anything special, lean in to help those who need it in their battle with sin. Our aim is not to bring glory to our name and see ourselves as anything special, it’s to lift high the name of Jesus and help other’s faithfully follow the only One who truly is something. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3417

Question To Ponder: Why might it be tempting to believe we overcame our sin on our own?
