Galatians – Chapter 6

  • For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Galatians 6:3 – Paul starts out our chapter by reminding the church of our vital role in one another’s life. If we see a brother or sister in Christ stuck in sin, our role is to help them get unstuck. We aren’t to exclude, ignore, or cast condemnation, we are to come alongside them and bear their burden with them so they can be found walking faithfully again. Yet Paul highlights something that can be found in a believer’s life that will hinder them from ever being able to help another follower in Christ. That something is pride. Pride tells us we are too honorable and too important to stoop so low to help this person with their sin struggle. Pride is what convinces us that its acceptable for us to look down on another’s sin and cast condemning judgement on them. This is why Paul says what he does in our verse above, if anything thinks he is something special then he should remember the reality that he in fact is nothing. Not meaning we are worthless or trash, but when it comes to overcoming sin each of us are only victorious over sin because of Jesus. No one on their own overcame their sin, no one is more special than the next because they with their own power defeated their sin. That’s the idea of us all being “nothing.” We’re all on the same level when it comes to our ability to overcome sin on our own. So instead of puffing up with pride like you did anything special, lean in to help those who need it in their battle with sin. Our aim is not to bring glory to our name and see ourselves as anything special, it’s to lift high the name of Jesus and help other’s faithfully follow the only One who truly is something. • And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9- I find myself loving this verse and being very frustrated with it at the same time (I think that’s alright). See I love the hope that it brings that in time all this we’re going through now will be over and it will be all worth it when the blessing comes. That’s really what we should focus on, but I keep getting frustrated with the fact I have to wait till this season is over to taste that blessing. If your like me in this, take this idea to heart. God knows your frustration. He isn’t oblivious to the season you’re in right now. With everyday you stay in this season it’s shaping you to be ready for the next season. There is purpose in the length of this season right now. Maybe that purpose is to grow you, or maybe it’s actually for someone else. That’s all up to God, just know He sees you and His promises are worth enduring for. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 536
  • Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 – Imagine you are walking into church one day and you see another person also walking into church, but they have their arms loaded with supplies they are carrying in. So many supplies in fact that they are struggling to balance it all as they walk. What would you most likely do? You would run over and seek to assist them in carrying in their supplies. This is the image here we ought to think of when relating this verse to our story. For we are all “carrying supplies” somehow in this life. One may have a calling to some ministry. Another may have a difficulty in their family life. Another may have a sin struggle that they have navigated for years. Those of us then who are seeking to follow after Jesus should seek how we can help carry their load. This may look like volunteering in that particular ministry to help them accomplish everything needed. This may look like holding someone accountable and checking in periodically on how they are doing with their sin struggle. It may be as simple as offering some time to sit and have coffee with someone to listen to all that’s on their heart. As believers in Jesus, we have a Savior who has stepped into our story and bore all our sin and is our ever present help in our times of need. Let’s seek to follow the example of our Savior by seeking out how we can offer a helping hand with the load others are carrying. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2395
