The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun. Numbers 34:16-17 – The Lord is speaking to Moses in this chapter about the outer boundaries of the new nation of Israel. They were about to conquer Canaan and the Lord was showing them how far to go in their conquests. Yet what was given by the Lord was the outer boundaries, not the inner ones. Remember there was nine and a half tribes that were going to be calling this place home, and this new land was to be divided up between those tribes…and everyone was to be in agreement with what everyone got… I couldn’t imagine all the turmoil in the discussion this brought seeing how much this nation complained during the forty years of wandering, yet the Lord made the right call on who was to lead this discussion and to settle the decision on who got what. Eleazar and Joshua, the high priest and the leader. These two were the ones who were making the decision on who received what portions of land as their inheritance from the Lord. As I was studying this passage I discovered that many commentaries pointed out to how this is the same within our life with God. Our High Priest and Leader, Jesus Christ, is the One who portions out our inheritance. Jesus gets to determine what we receive, not us. This means He is the One to determines if we receive eternal life and adoption into the family of God. He also is the One who determines what we receive in this life of blessings and provision. As the people in Moses’ day were to be so should we be, content with what our High Priest and Leader decides we receive. If Jesus decides we are to receive that job, that healing, that relationship, that blessing, amen…but if not, amen to that as well. No, this is not an easy posture to take, but it is the holiest one. Trust the decision of the Lord who loves you. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3384
