- If she is a wall, we will build on her a battlement of silver, but if she is a door, we will enclose her with boards of cedar. Song of Solomon 8:11 – Here we likely have the brothers of the maiden speaking, looking back at when she was a young girl before the age of marriage. They saw themselves as the keepers of their sister’s purity and would do their part to make sure she remained pure until marriage. If their sister was a wall, someone who would boldly stand against sin, they would bless and encourage her in that. If their sister was a door, one who freely allowed sin into her life, they would block up that path making it impossible for sin to enter. They saw the value us their sister’s purity and was willing to do what was necessary to keep her pure. Such ought to be our posture when it comes to the purity of life of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Unlike Cain’s attitude in Genesis, we are our brother’s keeper. If then our fellow believer is a wall, someone who is bold against sin, let’s be willing to come alongside them and encourage that boldness and strengthen it. If our fellow believer is a door, someone who is weak against sin, let’s be willing to come alongside them and help cut off the pathways that sin has to their life so they can walk free of such sin. Either way the journey is one that is alongside our fellow believer. Our life of following the Lord is designed to be done in community with others. Where we help others and they help us. See then the believers around you, especially the young and less mature believers, and dwell on how you can come alongside and strength them wherever they may be weak. - Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised. The Song of Solomon 8:7 – This book has been deeply showing the love between the church and God. How rich and full it is and how it satisfies all our desires. This verse is needed as a reminder that nothing else can satisfy like God’s love can. We can gather everything we can or be willing to give up all we have to find the same fulfilling of our desires that God gives in something other than Him. As though this verse ends, that pursuit would be utterly despised. It would come up empty. Pursue God then. If He is the only place we can find what we are looking for, why look elsewhere? Give Him your everything and see how He shows His love back. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 854
- O you who dwell in the gardens, with companions listening for your voice; let me hear it. Song of Solomon8:13 – Here we have the groom speaking one final time in our passage to his bride, the one who dwells in the garden. As a commentary spoke on, what’s beautiful about the reason she is given this title is because she has been so cherished and loved by her husband she is as pleasant as a garden. Know when we allow God time in our day to pour out His love and cherish us like He so longs to do, we find ourselves in the same position as the bride, pleasant and growing. His love, joy, and compassion pour deeply out onto us and begins to overflow out onto then people we encounter. The care He puts into us strengthens us to care for others. We become pleasant, someone others long to have around. Yet remember it’s not because of our talents or gifts that is making us pleasant, it’s the overflow of what God is pouring into us onto them that is drawing them near. Be sure then you are finding time to be deeply poured into by God. If it’s His love and His care in our story that makes us pleasant like we are talking about today, let’s dwell deeply in Him so others can witness what sort of growth and care God can give them.
