- At midnight the man was startled and turned over, and behold, a woman lay at his feet! 9 He said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer.” Ruth 3:8-9 – In our chapter today we read about the role of a redeemer. The Hebrew word used for redeemer in our passage is “goel” and means “kinsmen redeemer.” Scripture teaches us about this unique role in a family. The “goel” would be the one in the family to protect the interests and future of the family. If some land or some family member was sold, they’d get them back. If a crime was made against the family, they’d be the ones to avenge the family. In Ruth’s case, another role of the goel was to make sure the family line continued by marrying the childless widow in the family. In our passage, Ruth is approaching Boaz with somewhat of a marriage proposal. She asks him to be her goel and to spread his wings over her. This was a custom of the Jewish people at that time where the husband would spread the corner of his clock over his wife to symbolize that she had now come under his protection. While this is a beautiful scene unfold for Ruth and Boaz, let us never forget this is our story with the Lord. In Ezekiel 16:8b the Lord is speaking and reminds us that, “…I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine.” The Lord has spread His garment over us. Jesus has become our goel, our redeemer. We were sold off by our sin to the enemy, but the Lord paid our ransom so we could be brought back into His family. We have a redeemer and His name is Jesus. Praise the Lord we have been brough under the wings of Jesus’ protection and welcomed into His family. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3018
- Ruth 3 Daily DEVO She replied, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.” Ruth 3:18 – Eww, the four letter word we dislike to hear and read we have to do….wait. Yet like with Ruth, if God tells you to wait that means He is working and preparing things for your next step. Possibly it’s things just aren’t ready yet for you to move on, maybe you aren’t ready to move on, or it could be that you need to stay in this stage of life a little while longer to help in someone else’s story. The reasons God tells us to wait can be many, but know there is a reason behind the command. God hasn’t forgot you and He never will. If God is directing us to wait, listen to that command so you can fully enjoy the blessing when God brings it. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 604
- Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?” Ruth 3:1 – Naomi knew what was going to be best for Ruth. If Ruth was able to find a worthy husband, he could provide rest and security for her in ways that Naomi couldn’t. So Naomi began the process of pointing Ruth to her redeemer. Do you have people in your life you love? Do want the absolute best for them? Do you believe that Jesus can do more for them than you can? That He can offer rest and security for them in ways you never could? Then begin pointing them to their Redeemer. Help them know who Jesus is, help them know the path to Him, help them know the sort of rest and security they can find in Him. Be seeking rest for those you love in the arms of their Redeemer.
