Ruth – Chapter 2

  • And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” Ruth 2:2 – Once the two ladies were settled back in Bethlehem, Ruth made the choice to go glean among the fields of those in Bethlehem. In Leviticus 19:9-10 we see the Lord set a command for His people that would act as a way of taking care of the poor and foreigners among them. The command was that farmers weren’t to harvest everything in their fields, and not to pick up all that fell to the ground. They were to leave the extra and the fallen for those in need to come and harvest for themselves for free. This is what Ruth was going out to do, and she finds herself in the field of Boaz. Can we pause though and see what this meant was happening in Israel? There was a harvest. Why that’s important was in chapter 1 we see the family of Elimelech leaving Israel for Moab because of the famine. Yet apparently people remained in Israel all those years through the famine, worked their fields still, and were more blessed than Elimelech’s family was. The point is Elimelech didn’t have to choose the sinful path of Moab. Sometimes when faced with a difficult situation we can feel as if the only choice we have is the choice of sin. We believe we have to take matters back into our hands and we’re done waiting on the Lord anymore. We say and do things that are not honoring to the Lord because we feel we have no other choice. What we see though from this chapter is there is also the choice to remain faithful, and that choice is the more blessed one. God will never walk you into a corner where the only way out is choosing sin. There is always a faithful path available, let us be wise enough to choose it. • Ruth 2 Daily DEVO Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women.” Ruth 2:8 – As you read through this chapter, notice our Boaz’s relationship with Ruth mirrors how Jesus is with us. Jesus wants us to stay with Him and keep our eyes on Him and Him work. He wants us to be satisfied and have extra leftover in our life. He wants to keep us safe from those who would harm us. Know as kind and as sweet Boaz is being here to Ruth, Jesus has a much kinder and sweeter love for you. Choose to accept the fact Jesus loves you like this. • And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the Lord, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” Naomi also said to her, “The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers.” Ruth 2:20 – Redeem = to gain or regain possession  of something in exchange for payment. Here we see God working deeply behind the scenes. Opening doors, guiding gently, and opening hearts. Of all the people Ruth could have gone to, she “just so happened” to find herself in Boaz’s field. Her redeemer’s field. Today you have found yourself in your redeemer’s field. Maybe you knew you were walking into His presence, maybe you just stumbled in here, but you as in the field of your redeemer Jesus. Here Jesus will protect, guide, feed, love, and grow us. You have a redeemer in Jesus, someone who wants to regain a relationship with you and has paid the highest cost to do so. Know today you are in His field; He sees you and even if you are unaware of it He’s providing for you. Now He’s welcoming you into His house and into His arms. Come in, dwell, and be with your redeemer. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac  – Daily DEVO 1980
