Revelation – Chapter 17

  • Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.” Revelation 17:1-2 – Here this means that Satan will seek to create an anti-church, anti-God religion that will set people’s heart in a direction away from God. While this is something spoken about to happen during the end times, we must not be foolish to think our enemy isn’t seeking to do the same now. His whole agenda is to keep people away from God and running after anything else other than the Savior who can save them from their sin. Knowing this, how should this change your day? If we know the enemy is working, let’s work harder. Just because he is pointing people away from God, we can be drawing people near to Jesus even more. So what’s at least one way today you can oppose the work of our enemy and be drawing people’s attention to the God who loves them and can save them? • And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. Revelation 17:3 – This chapter is full of imagery that needs to be broken down to understand, so let’s start there. The beast is the Antichrist. This woman, the great prostitute, is the spiritual “Babylon,” a one-world religion that will be used by the Antichrist to gain power. Seven heads are seven world powers (6 behind us, 1 to come), and the ten horns are ten kings that will give their power to the Antichrist. Remember as well that prostitution and adultery often in scripture are referring to idolatry. So what we have here is a look back again at the reign of the Antichrist during the Tribulation. There will be a one-world religion that the world will be hooked on, it will be led by the Antichrist, and it will seek to destroy the believers in God. When this one-world religion seems to be taking the glory away from the Antichrist, he’ll destroy it and take all the worship to himself instead. All this sounds a little overwhelming, doesn’t it? What hope is there if the whole world is going to unite against the Lord and His people? Let us remember though what verse 14 says, “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” Yes, they will come against the Lord, but our God is the Lord of lords and King of kings, and instead of crumbling under the pressure of their attack, He’ll conquer. This message is the one all must remember as we read the scary events of Revelation…Jesus wins. The question you must ask yourself is are you on the winning side?
