- Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth! Psalm 96:9 – I love visiting the national parks for the sights there at often so jaw dropping. All the pictures that are connected to these devotions are ones that I’ve taken and a good portion have been at said national parks. Splendor is a solid way to describe when you are standing at a lookout and you’re seeing the vastness of beaty in front of you. Yet how often do we think of holiness as something to find splendor in. If we’re honest our world doesn’t see holiness as something impressive or majestic. When something is considered “holy” it often gets connected with labels of stuffy, old, outdated, and not-for-me. Yet our psalmist sees God’s holiness very differently than that. The Lord’s holiness was something to find splendor in as in looking out over a glorious sunset over a powerful mountain range. The Lord’s holiness took the psalmist’s breath away because of its awesomeness. I encourage you today then to reframe your ideas around holiness if labels like stuffy and outdated match the way you see it. God’s holiness is one of the most precious attributes of our God for it is what sets Him apart from all others and reveals His perfect nature. I betcha if we took a few minutes out of our day today and paused long enough to think about God’s holiness, we too would be pushed to worship Him because of its splendor. Think about how God is sinless. Think about how God is never wrong. Think about how God never lies. Think about how God is absolutely perfect in every way. - For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Psalms 96:5 – All the things that people can place as gods in their life have no substance and can offer nothing to those who follow them. Jesus, the one true God, is the creator of all substance and has breathed life into everything that exists. All that has been created is here because of Jesus. Why then set your heart after something that can’t offer you what you really need? Why devote your life to something that has no substance when the creator of the heavens is here? - Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness. Psalm 96:11-13 – The heavens are going to show their gladness for the presence of the Lord. The earth is going to be heard about its joy for the presence of the Lord. The seas are going to roar and crash as their way of showing they are desiring the presence of the Lord. The fields are going to praise the presence of the Lord. Even every tree in the vast forests all sing for joy when the Lord comes. How about you? All of creation is lifting up their voices and sounds how they can to welcome the coming and presence of the Lord. Will your voice be a part of the sound? Not just someday in the future either, how about today wherever you are at? Maybe your voice isn’t yelling out, but by your life today and the plans you had made for the day, could Jesus see in your life a gladness for His presence in it? Maybe your day is like mine and needs some re-adjusting after reading a passage like this.
