- When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? Psalm 56:3-4 – We learn from the header that this psalm was written about the time when David was seized by the Philistines in 1 Samuel 21. This was a time in his life he would have felt truly isolated and alone. He had enemies from foreign nations surrounding him and even his own people chasing him down to kill him. While certainly a brave man for David even in his teens would take a lion by the mane if it was attacking one of his sheep, and let us not forgot the whole Goliath story, we see this brave David still battling with fear. What is so wonderful for us is David reveals what he did with that fear when it arose. He put his trust in the Lord. He chose to trust the promises that God had given him as a reason to not be afraid. While David battled fear when he was surround by enemies and hunted down by his countrymen, David chose to trust in the Lord. Spurgeon wrote concerning this verse, “It is possible, then, for fear and faith to occupy the mind at the same moment.” For fear in itself isn’t unholy, it though depends on how we respond to the fear that arises within us. Do we run for the hills hoping some earthly thing or idol will save us? Or do we turn to the Lord and trust in His promises? When then you are afraid, put your trust in the Lord. Trust in the Lord’s praiseworthy promises. For when God’s hands are surrounding you, what can the enemy really do to us? I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3011
- You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? Psalms 56:8 – God sees your pain, hears your cry, and has not forgotten about you. Thats what we can learn from this passage today. All the times we’ve lifted up our concerns and struggles to God, He has heard them and keep track of them. We also learn from the psalm that He not only hears but acts on our behalf. We must remember that God isn’t an absent God where He doesn’t see our pain and hear our cry. Nor is He a powerless God who hears our cry but can’t do anything about it. He is present and powerful. He hears and He acts. We can put our trust in God. - For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. Psalm 56:13 – David shares his deep pain with his readers as he writes this psalm. He is being pressed on every side all day long by his enemies. Yet through it all he reminds himself, and us, that God is a safe place to put our trust. In the midst of his heavy seasons David still kept his trust in the Lord and the Lord came through for him. This final verse in the psalm then reveals why God would come through like this for us. He delivers our soul from death and our feet from falling so that we can walk with God even in this earthly life. He’s made the way for us to walk and be with Him in Heaven once we die and what we see here is that God will rescue us in the pains of our today so we can walk with Him in our today. God isn’t wanting to wait to walk with you till your life on earth is over, He is wanting to walk with you right now. He is saving you from your enemies of today, He is moving aside mountains today, He is calming the storms of life today, all so you can walk with Him today. Know this eternal life with God doesn’t start the moment you die, it started the moment you placed your faith in Jesus. Meaning if you are a follower of Jesus, your eternal life has already begun and God is wanting to live it out with you today. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2016
