- But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. Psalm 52:8 – We learn from the header that this was a psalm written concerning the events of David, Doeg, and King Saul. While on the run from King Saul David visited a priest, and a man named Doeg reported this to Saul. On the king’s command, Doeg also murdered 85 unarmed priests and went on after that to murder the whole city of those priests. Doeg was an evil man, and this psalm is David comforting himself knowing the Lord will handle such evil. God will break him, God will uproot him, and God will make a laughingstock out of him. In verse 8 though David compares himself to Doeg and sees the stark contrast. While Doeg would be uprooted, David would be planted in the house of God. While Doeg would be broken down, David would be a long-lasting tree nourished constantly due to being planted in such a place of blessing. All this though doesn’t dismiss the reality of what Doeg did. Doeg still comprised David’s security and he did murder all those people. His evil still happened and evil is still taking place today even as we read this psalm together. Where our comfort comes from in all this remembering where the righteous are planted. We are planted in God’s house with God’s blessing nourishing us for eternity. Yes, we’ll still see evil and we’ll likely even feel evil’s work around us. We though serve a God who deals with evil doers like Doeg and blesses those who follow Him like David. Remain faithful and remember where you’re planted, near your Savior in His house. - The righteous shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying, “See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!” Psalms 52:6-7- Please don’t let this be your story. Don’t let it be said of you that you trusted in yourself and what you have to take care of you in this life and set aside this “God thing” because you didn’t need it. I understand that in life there are things our power and resources can handle which make us think we don’t need anyone helping us. Truth is though while there are things we can handle, there are many more we can’t. Like your afterlife for one. Please recognize you can’t do life on your own. You need God in your story. Know that if you find yourself in the spot where your power, smarts, and resources come up short and you need help, God is always here and I’ll always be happy to direct you to Him. - Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The steadfast love of God endures all the day. Psalm 52:1 – When you find out someone backstabbed you and the end result was your worst opposition headed straight for you, is your first thought about God’s steadfast love? Yeah, me neither! Yet, David after that happened to him, this was his heart. We see from the chapter heading this was written by David after he was betrayed by Doeg, a guy who pointed out where David was to King Saul when David was on the run. I’m sure there was still feelings of anger, yet in the midst of all the other feelings David still remembered the steadfast love of God. That when betrayal comes, hurt happens, and opposition comes straight for us that these aren’t signs of an absence of God’s love. These are realities everyone faces in this broken world we live in. We as followers of Jesus though have a God whose love remains steadfast for us through the negatives and He remains a safe place to find shelter in when the push gets too heavy. Yes, hurt and hurtful people will be a constant in this life, but so will God’s love. Seek in the moments when the hurts are fresh and deep to remind yourself of the love of God you still have in your story. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac- Daily DEVO 2012
