Psalm – Chapter 5

  • Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. Psalm 5:2 – As I read over this verse a couple unique things stand out to me about David’s prayer. First King David is praying to the real King. While seated on the king’s throne, while surrounded by the king’s palace, while everywhere he would look was the king’s servants and treasures…David knew who was the true King in his story. David may have been the king God placed over Israel, but God was the King of Kings and the King over all the earth. Understanding that ultimate, sovereign role of the Lord was essential for David’s prayer life. Also note who David prayed to. He says to you God do I pray. While that seems like an obvious thing, keep in mind Israel’s struggles with idolatry. For hundreds of years before and after David Isreal submitted themselves to worship of all sorts of false gods. They sacrificed and prayed to gods of stone, silver, and gold. Here though David is making it clear to all those who read this psalm, and also clear to the Lord, who He is calling out to for help and who he is worshiping. Let us today keep in mind who God is and pray only to Him. We may have titles or importance, but God is King over all and we ought to honor Him as such. We may not be tempted to pray to some golden idol, but we may pray in such a away to gain the attention of others or pray even to a false version of God that isn’t the God of scripture. Make sure that you are not praying so you appear a certain way to other people, but your prayers are a conversation between you and your Heavenly Father. God is your King and God is your God, so come and speak with your King and your God freely today. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2960

  • But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Psalms 5:7 – Oh if we as a generation of the church can fully take hold of the message being spoken here what freedom can be found! We can enter God’s house, but how? Through your amazing church attendance? Through your elaborate end of the year church offering? How about the Bible Reading streak you have on your Bible app? Is that what the passage says or does it say due to God’s abundance of steadfast love we will we enter into His house? Don’t take my words as trashing those other things, if done with the right heart those are amazing gifts to God, they just don’t earn you a spot with God. That only comes through God’s abundance of love being shown through Jesus. So remember this, if nothing you do earned you God’s love nothing you do can take it away. Don’t live in this fear that you’ve lost God’s love in your life and are no longer with Him. If you’ve accepted His life and love through Jesus, then it’s yours forever. That’s the freedom we need to remember. Not that we now can do whatever we want, but that even if we do slip up in our pursuit of God we still have God’s love with us. This message alone may be what can change the course of your walk with God this new year. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 767
  • O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. Psalm 5:3- One of the many beautiful things about our relationship with Jesus is that we can come to Him whenever. 2pm or 2am makes no difference to Him, He’s always ready to receive us. What I love about today’s passage is the psalmist’s heart for wanting to be with God. Yes, he could have waited till later in the day to approach God, but He didn’t. Like many of us with coffee as the first thing we go after in the morning, time with God was that for him. He was aware of how deeply God was needed in his day and the change God can make when welcomed into our day. I encourage you to create a habit of approaching God in your morning. Speak with Him, invite Him into your day, and let Him know you are aware of your need for Him throughout your day. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1722
