Psalm – Chapter 48

  • As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God, which God will establish forever. Selah Psalm 48:8 – This psalm is such a beautiful psalm of reflection on God’s greatness. In past studies of this psalm, I learned about the word “perambulate.” It means to walk through a place for pleasure, dwelling on something wonderful. In verse 8 the psalm is dwelling on the wonderful things that he had heard the Lord had done in the past. Possibly things like how God had saved His people, how God formed the Heavens, or how God has promised eternity with Him for His people. What was bringing Him the most joy was the reality of what he had heard God had done wasn’t something only stuck in the past, but his own eyes had seen such wonders in his own day. He’s seen God fulfill promises and he’s seen God save His people from the hand of their enemies. The wonders of God weren’t just something in the past for him, but something within his life currently. This too needs to be a truth we are aware of as well. The wonders of God aren’t something isolated to the pages of scripture for those in the past. The wonder-working, all-power, saving God of scripture is the God that is in our story today, and He hasn’t changed. While He may move today differently than we see in scripture, know He still is moving and still is working on behalf of His people. Why though we may not be seeing it is because we haven’t taken the time to properly perambulate, for we are so busy and giving everything else in life our focus. Pause, breath, open your eyes, and dwell today on the things that God is doing and the things you have in your life only because of Jesus. When you begin to look, you begin to see the wonders of the Lord all around. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3003

  • We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple. Psalms 48:9 – Here’s a new habit we should all form, to think on God’s steadfast love for us. The psalmist writes that while in the temple of God he looked back, remembered, and pondered the love God had shown him. While this habit is easy to do when life is great, it not so easy when the struggle comes. Struggle or not, the truth though about God’s love for you never changes. He always has and always will love you. Dwell on that today and remember the love He has for you. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 984
  • Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever. Psalm 48:12-14 – Perambulate. While studying this passage I came across this word that I had never seen or heard of before. It means to walk through or around a place especially for pleasure in a leisurely way. I love how it directs us to approach God. It reminds me of how God walked in the garden of eden in the cool of the day. God is inviting us to slowly walk with Him, to look at all He has done and accomplished, to be amazed at His strength, and to see His ability to be all we need for forever. God is inviting us to perambulate with Him. Let’s choose then to walk with Him like this. He is inviting us to see all that His is and is able to do in our story. In the chaos that often accompanies our life a walk with God like this is exactly what we need. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1765
