- Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers. Psalm 39:12 – We see in this start of this psalm David struggling to remain sinless in whatever his situation was. He knew if he broke his silence he’d say something he shouldn’t, so he chose to remain silent. But he broke that silence with the Lord, pleading for help from this broken world. In the verse above we see David speak some deep truths we to must latch onto when we are exhausted with this earthly life. First, that we are sojourners, travelers and foreigners, to this world if we are a part of the family of God. Our home is heaven, and one day we’ll be there, but for now we walk as travelers in someone else’s homeland. Second, that God is with us while we travel. Notice the language speaks to the truth that we travel as a guest “with” the Lord, not “from” God or “to” God. We no longer walk this life alone. As believers, we will find ourselves frustrated and struggling in this world of sin and we’ll long for relief from it. Know that God sees the frustration and struggle for He is walking with you as you walk through this life. Take joy knowing your home is Heaven and this life will be settled and gone someday. Until then, navigate the journey of life knowing you are never taking a step alone. God is with us and God is leading us home, He just has work for us to do on the road there to invite others along for the journey. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2994
- My heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue Psalms 39:3 – David was trying hard to push down and back the sin in his life. Yet the desire for it became hotter and stronger as He mused, as he let his mind dwell on it. Then he spoke, the very thing he was trying to hold back, he did. David tried to not sin by relying on his own strength to keep him from sinning. That didn’t work out for him and it won’t work out for you either. We should strive to set aside all the sinfulness that is in our life, but we must rely on God’s strength, not our own strength alone, to overcome the sin in our story. For us alone, we can’t overcome sin as we see with David. With God though we can overcome all sin for good. Sin doesn’t have to be a part of your story anymore, but it’s going to take a bigger strength than your own to push it out. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 975
- I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.” Psalm 39:1 – The psalmist made a plan on how he was to keep himself from sin. Rather than being reactive whenever temptation was present he chose to be proactive in his ways to guard himself from times of temptation. How often do we plan ahead to guard ourselves from sin? This may look like choosing in the morning to not go somewhere we know is a temptation filled place. This may mean spending more time in prayer to incline your heart towards God and away from temptations. This may mean asking someone to hold you accountable where they will ask you tomorrow directly if you fell into temptation the previous day. Sin is a part of all our stories, but what are we doing at this moment to guide us away from sin in the next moment? Let’s game plan now how to be ready to avoid sin whenever it shows it’s ugly face rather than being caught unprepared. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1756
