- I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. Psalm37:25 – We learn from this verse that this wasn’t a psalm written by David in his early years. This is a psalm filled with the wisdom of a man who had sought to follow after the Lord most of his life. From David’s experience, he stated he’d never seen someone who was truly following after the Lord be forgotten by the Lord and he never witnessed the children of such a person ever in need of things like bread. The Lord away provided for His own. Now commentators have been torn over this verse, and maybe even you are too. For there are certainly very faithful people whose life appears forgotten by the Lord. And there are children of faithful people who have chosen the wayward life and are experiencing the destitution of the world. Let us remember this psalm is seeking to share wisdom rather than seeking to form doctrine. We may see what David says he never saw, but that doesn’t negate the point David was making. The righteous are taken care of and never forgotten by God. Their children have access to such blessing because of their faithfulness. The wicked will be able to enjoy their wickedness for a short while, but those who seek to live holy will last forever and their joys will last forever. Walk away from this psalm not believing that we’ll get whatever we want or we’ll never taste struggle, such things is not the message of this psalm. The heartbeat is to open our eyes to the temporary nature of the fill sin brings and the forever nature of what God brings. Life in abundance is available in Jesus, and the pathway to such abundance is making the choice to live faithfully today. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2992
- The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. Psalms 37:23-24 – God has your tomorrow under control. When reading through this psalm, verse after verse supported the truth that God is able to handle your future and is handling it. Our role is to trust Him. To be patient when our worry tells us to act. To be still when our fear is telling us to move. Sometimes in some seasons rather than rushing forward, God tells us to simply be still. Then as we begin to move as He directs, we have verses like these telling us He’ll make our path solid and straight and catch us when we fall. So trust God when He says to be still that He is working things out and trust Him when He says to move that He’ll take care of you every step. - In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. Psalm 37:10 – You remember Qin Shi Huang right? You know the first emperor of the Chinese Qin dynasty? The one who built so much in ancient China and was such a powerful force in his day? If you’re like me, I didn’t know about him until I googled “rich, ruthless leaders of the past” so I could have an example for the devotion. That’s the point though of this verse, we don’t remember him. Yes, at one point his rule was great and his power was great, but now he isn’t even known by most people. Here scripture reminds us that the presence of the wicked may be great now but in time even a search party won’t be able to find a remnant of their power. So don’t fret over the wicked. Don’t envy the wicked either. Yes, they seem to be having such success, but listen to their end scripture speaks of. Death and no lasting legacy. Incline yourself to God and find the blessing this psalm speaks clearly of. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 1754
